Discipleship Week of 2/23/09

This weeks large group focuses on the cost of discipleship, particularly in Luke 14 when Jesus speaks about it.

"Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple."
- Luke 14:27.

This is a verse we probably all hear many times but meditating on this chapter for the last week has been particularly humbling for me. I think of all the areas in my life which I still cling to and realize just how imperfect I am. Because of this I am reminded of my need for Christ and the power of the Gospel to effect change in my life.

Week of 2/16/09

Recently it has been really on my heart to really try and commit to being better about my spiritual disciplines. Being intentional about spending time with God consistently. I think in my experience in college, right around this time of year is when I really get lost in the thick of things. Midterms and school work starts ramping up in addition to whatever things I'm involved in. I want to make an extra effort to spend time reading the word, praying, and continually reminding myself of the Gospel and it's truth in my life. I think this is something shared by several people, with people in the ministry committing to basic discipleship training and 20 days with God. I hope that this set is a reminder for me as well as everyone else of the power of the Gospel as well as the personal commitments we have made in light of Christ's sacrifice.

Let's talk about hope. Week of 1/26/2009

I was wondering what songs we should do for this week and I had a tough time seeing where God was leading my heart so I thought back to some of the songs we did last semester. I thought particularly about God of the City, especially after hearing it live at the concert last week. I thought back to the hope with which we sang it at the first large group and all the promises that God has fulfilled since then: several outreach events including feeding 500 at thanksgiving, people committing to serve in various ministries, building up of community, and people hearing the gospel to name a few. I am reminded again of the hope that we carry, not in our own abilities, but in God's grace for a broken people. So with this set, it is my hope that we can all be strengthened by the hope of remembering what is to come. The kingdom of God is coming and will bring restoration, peace, joy, and other such wonderful nouns. Isn't that worth our hope?

Hosanna - Hillsong Live - Saviour King

Sing to the King - Candi Pearson Shelton - Best of Passion CD2

God Of This City - Chris Tomlin - Hello Love

First large group of the year. Week of 01/19/2009

Wow it's been quite a while since I've posted. I wanted to write some reflections during the break but was away from my computer pretty much the entire time. God has blessed me so much this break. From stretching me and humbling me, to growing me and encouraging me, this break has been a time that I was able to grow closer to Him and strengthen my convictions to know him more deeply. With that, I want to go into this semester focused and prepared for God's will to be done. For the first praise set of this year, I wanted to simply focus on Christ first. To begin the first large group of the semester, I hope we all can remind ourselves once again of the power of the Gospel and our relation to Christ, our savior. I feel that if we can do this, everything else just naturally falls into place.

None But Jesus - Hillsong United - United We Stand

Your Grace Is Enough - Chris Tomlin - Arriving

Unashamed - Starfield - Beauty In The Broken

Last large group of the semester. Week of 12/1/08

This is the last set of the semester. I really wanted to post up this song Power of Your Name for the entire break but either couldn't cause I wasn't at school or was lazy. I really love this song for its powerful lyrics and awesome guitar. A lot of times I will leave my zune on shuffle and will hear most of the songs on it but once in a while I will really "discover" a song that I really like even though I may have heard it many times already. This happened to me for this song this weekend and I have been reflecting about it. Its weird that when I think about the brokenness of this world, especially in light of the terrorist attacks in India that I find more reason to be thankful for what I have and what God will do through His people.

The Power of Your Name - Lincoln Brewster - Today is the Day

Saviour King - Hillsong - Saviour King
